LED lighting are another rapidly emerging technology that may provide energy-efficient lighting with the next generation. LED lightings are even more efficient than compact fluorescent bulbs and last up to 100,000 hours (10 times longer than compact fluorescent bulbs and 100 times longer than incandescent bulbs). LED light bulbs also allow a range of colors, light up quickly, don't contain any mercury, and look pretty cool. They are now the cutting edge of lighting.
Although LED light bulbs are still expensive for regular lighting applications in homes, their unique capabilities are driving their rapid uptake into specialty applications, such as Coast Guard buoys, traffic signals, flashlights, and architectural installations. Businesses are starting to market LED Street-lamps-solar-powered in some cases to be extra green. LED lightings can be useful in almost any application where it is difficult to change a bulb or where a burned-out bulb can mar the whole display. One smart application Wal-Mart is pursuing with vendors is putting LED light bulbs in refrigerator cases, to avoid adding heat and the need to change light bulbs inside a chilled cabinet. One LED application that's proven popular with consumers is LED Christmas tree lights, which last far longer, use 10 percent of the energy of old lights, and avoid annoying burnout.
